Abhyangam (whole body massage)
Abhyanga can be defined as whole body massage with warm medicated oil. It starts with head followed by upper part of the body, lower, sides, back and reverse side. Ayurvedic massage is a deep tissue type and it follows a steam bath session. The massage is performed at different poses such as sitting, supine, sideways, back etc. The medicated oils are chosen as per the body condition or requirement of the patient. This will enable the body to eliminate toxins through the sweating out.
Ayurvedic massage is most relaxing and refreshing to the body. It will improve blood circulation, stimulate nervous system and remove stiff of the muscles.
Abhyangam and steam bath is a warning up therapy and it is done for a couple of days prior to the Panchakarma procedures.
Shirodhara in Kerala Ayurveda is a very important treatment. It is a process of streaming medicated oil on the head and forehead for about 30 to 45 minutes. Shirodhara can also be done with other medicated liquids milk, buttermilk, herbal decoctions etc based on the nature and purpose of treatment.

Shirovasti treatment is a process in which medicated oil is filled in a specially devised cap fitted on the head.
